TORONTO - Both the Humiliation and Parkdale Hockey Lads posted shutout victories this past Saturday night, while the Wheatfield Souldiers allowed just a single goal on route to the team's sixth victory of the 2011/12 UUHA regular season.
Brockton Rockets forward Oliver Sutherns surprised Souldiers goalie John Sutton a mere minute-and-a-half in, converting a feed from teammate Vince Berry to put the upstart exhibition squad ahead by a goal on the first shot of the game. The lead held up for just three minutes, however, as Souldiers winger Brad Sveistrup responded with his first of two goals on the night. The Wheatfield Souldiers (6-1-4) pulled ahead near the end of the opening frame when sniper Mike Harkness combined with Sveistrup for the former's first tally of an astonishing five-goal performance. (Harkness would finish the game with an individual total of seven points, propelling him well up the UUHA points leader board in the process.) Eric Toth and Kevin Magura both put in multiple-point performances, as well, while Derek Domingos, Jon Weier and Rob Zifarelli each picked up singles in the 8-1 victory.
The Lads (3-6-1) enjoyed some rare offence from veteran forward Tommy Gough as the team rode roughshod over the Porcupines (2-9-0) by a score of 4-1. After a scoreless 1st period, team points leader Kyle Welton got the Lads on the board, successfully converting a passing play from brothers Fil and Fernando Freitas at the 12:25 mark of the middle frame. Five minutes later, Welton would find Gough to the right of Porcs goaltender Dean Bentley for a nifty power-play tally. Mike Frolick would net one of his own before the period was over, taking the Lads to the 3rd period with a three-goal advantage. Just one goal would be potted in the final period, though, and it would be Gough's second of the night - this time an unassisted marker. Gough and Welton collected Stars-of-the-Game honours, along with donut-posting goalie John Sutton, who was on loan from the Souldiers for the night.
Meanwhile, the Humiliation (5-3-2) took advantage of an offensively challenged Gas Station Islanders (4-4-2) side to better their opponents by a lopsided score of 5-0. Defenceman Eric Partington was first to light the GSI lamp, putting one past goaltender Sean Markle with 3:17 remaining in the opening period. The Humiliation would increase their lead by a pair before the period was over, as Paul Morris and Mike Craig collected their first and third goals of the season, respectively. Team points leader Mike Thompson potted the lone goal of the 2nd period, while Mark Sanagan stuffed the cushion with another tally midway through the final frame. Goaltender Luke Smit posted the shutout for the victorious side, assisted to a degree by a defensive core that limited the Islanders' sticks to just five registered shots on net. With the win, the Humiliation turned around a three-game losing streak and effectively locked up third place in the overall standings heading into the league's final week of 2011.
The UUHA is back in action this coming Saturday, Dec. 17 with the Humiliation facing off against the Parkdale Porcupines at 7:00 pm. The Jokers (7-3-0) will attempt to wrest first place back as they take on the Gas Station Islanders at 8:00 pm. And the final game of 2011 will see the Parkdale Hockey Lads try to put a streak together as they do battle with current league leaders, the Wheatfeld Souldiers.
