Porcs Post 2nd Consecutive Win, Jokers Deal Souldiers 1st Loss

TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines netted their second consecutive win this past Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Gas Station Islanders. The game represented the first official UUHA win for the Porcs (2-8-0), their previous victory coming in exhibition play against the Brockton Rockets. The team picked up the maximum 2.5 points on the night, going penalty-free for three periods, as well.

Defenceman Lorne Kredl opened things up after nearly two full periods of close-checking, scoreless hockey, converting a feed from team points leader Ryan Urquhart with just under two minutes remaining in the 2nd period. Speedy Porcs forward Todd Moffat made it 2-0 early in the 3rd frame, but that lead was soon halved by Islanders spare Rodney Merchant, on loan to a short GSI bench from the Wheatfield Souldiers. (Parkdale Lads' loaner Fernando Freitas also assisted on what would stand up as the lone goal of the night for the blue side.) Kredl would pick up his second point of the game by assisting on an insurance marker by Matt Latreille. Geoff McPeek was also credited with a helper on that play.

The win saw the Porcs draw even in the standings with the Parkdale Hockey Lads. The Lads (2-6-1), however, have a game in hand.

Speaking of the Lads, the team failed to carry over the momentum from its historic victory against the Jokers a fortnight prior to Saturday's exhibition tilt vs. the Hack. Sniper Louis Durand got the visiting side on the board early, making good on a pass from line mate Joe McGuinty a mere 20 seconds into the opening frame. Durand struck again just three minutes later, this time converting a set-up from Hack man Chris Barkley. Lads drew to within one at the 8:29 mark of the 2nd period when team points leader Kyle Welton finished off a nice set up involving Jason Abrams and defenceman Nick Hehn. But Aaron Foster answered back for the Hack, teaming up with Durand to restore their side's two-goal margin. Mike Frolick added one more for the Lads (with Hehn and Roger Santos assisting), but a pair of goals by Dave Laverdiere provided an excess of stuffing for the Hack's cushion.

With the win, the Hack improved to 2-0-0 in UUHA play this season. The team's three-game exhibition stint wraps up Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 when they take on the Gas Station Islanders.

In other Saturday night UUHA action, despite a short bench and the absence of snipers Mike Tacaks and Ted Bisaillion, the Jokers (7-3-0) handed the Wheatfield Souldiers (5-1-4) their first loss of the season, beating the Golden Boys 4-3 and recapturing 1st place overall in the process. Souldiers defenceman Keven Magura potted his first of the night at 8:40 of the 1st period, sending a hard, high slapshot over the left shoulder of Jokers netminder Burke Lawrence. Defence partner Mike Wilk collected an assist on the power-play goal (and, in doing so, got a monkey of his back with his first point of the campaign). The Souldiers went up by a pair early in the 2nd frame, this time with Magura depositing a cross-crease pass from Mike Harkness for a short-handed tally.

But the Jokers' Gary Rideout answered back a few minutes later, skating back an interception to solve Souldiers goaltended John Sutton on his first game back since suffering an off-season injury. Tyler Stewart then made good on a spring pass from Steve Levine to draw the teams even at pair each. The Souldiers, however, were not done with the 2nd period and neither was Magura, who scored unassisted at the 2:41 mark to put in his first three-goal performance of the season and, in the process, register the first recoded three-different-ways hat-trick in the team's 13-year history).

Any celebration of Magura's feat, however, was dampened early in the 3rd period when Joel Lacoursiere tallied to knot things up again. Despite continued pressure from the Souldiers (and a lower-body shot-blocking injury to Rideout), another draw appeared imminent until the dying seconds of the 3rd when Jokers call-up Eric Andrews took advantage of a Souldiers defensive lapse to spring league points leader Levine for a breakaway and subsequent goal. With just ten seconds remaining on the clock, Levine's ninth tally of the season stood up as the game-winning goal.

UUHA action continues  next Saturday, Dec. 10 with the Wheatfield Souldiers taking on the exhibition Brockton Rockets at 7:00 pm. The Lads go up against the Porcupines in a classic Parkdale derby at 8:00 pm, while the Humiliation returns to the ice to face off against the Gas Station Islanders at 9:00 pm.
