Lads Beat Jokers!

TORONTO - History was made this past Saturday evening as the Parkdale Hockey Lads defeated the Jokers Hockey Club for the first time ever. Although the teams had previously tied each other on two separate occasions, the vast majority of match-ups over the past ten years have seen the Jokers get the better of the Lads, typically with a considerable scoring margin. But that was not the case on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 (a date which will undoubtedly live long in Lads lore and Jokers infamy) as the Lads posted a 2-1 victory and earned a considerable morale boost in the process.

Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion opened the scoring at the 3:18 mark of the 1st period, converting a passing play from Paul Irving and Keven Magura, the latter of which had been added as a last-minute spare to the Jokers' anemic lineup of regulars. The Lads, however, responded early in the 2nd frame when lanky forward Paul Simmons deflected Roger Santos' shot to bulge the twine behind Jokers goalie Burke Lawrence. Both Lawrence and Lads counterpart Luis Freitas were kept equally busy throughout the first two periods, each turning aside 12 of 13 shots.

But it was the Lads who dominated the 3rd period, out-shooting their opponents by a 6-2 margin and potting the lone goal of the frame at the 11:05 mark. Sniper Kyle Welton was credited with the game-winning tally, while assists were awarded to defencemen Fabian Ruzic and Fernando Freitas (his second of the game). The Lads protected the lead brilliantly for the duration of the game, preventing the Jokers from gaining an offensive foothold and maintaining control of the puck in the Jokers' end for several prolonged bouts of play. The Jokers' cause wasn't helped out by the fact the team was shorthanded for the final four minutes of the game, including a pair of occasions that saw the Lads enjoying a two-man advantage.

The victory improved the Lads' sub-par season record to 2-5-1, while the Jokers (6-3-0) slipped to second place in the overall standings.

Meanwhile, the Parkdale Porcupines picked up their first win of the season, downing the exhibition Brockton Rockets by a score of 6-1. Forward Todd Moffat opened the scoring at 4:11 of the 1st period, scored again in the 2nd frame and completed the hat-trick early in the 3rd, earning 1st Star of the Game honours in the process. Ryan Urqhuart, Ross Machon and Peter Aquilina also tallied for the Porcs, who outshot their opponents by a margin of 24-11. Rockets forward Jason Pilling spoiled the shutout attempt by Porcs spare goaltender Peter Mitchell, picking up a feed from linemate Gregor Campbell to break in alone and light the lamp with a smooth, goal-mouth deke move.

And in other UUHA Saturday-night action, the Wheatfield Souldiers (5-0-4) bettered the Humiliation (4-3-2) by a score of 4-1 in a game that witnessed Souldiers scoring leader Eric Toth register his second-consecutive three-goal performance, and a natural hat-trick at that.

Souldiers captain Chuck Molgat opened the scoring on his first shift of the game, forcing a turnover at the opponent's blue line before cutting to the side of the net and wristing a shot over the shoulder of Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan. Mark Simmons knotted things up eight minutes later, sending a blistering slapshot caroming off the inside of the goalpost and over the goal line behind Souldiers goalie Sheldon Shurland. But Toth would respond less than a minute later, making good on a down-low set up from linemates Kelly McCaig and Scott Montgomery. Toth would add one more goal in each subsequent period with Montgomery, Derek Domingos and Keven Magura collecting helpers.

The UUHA 2011/12 regular season enjoys a schedule break over the Nov. 26 weekend with action resuming on Saturday, Dec. 3. That night will see the Wheatfield Souldiers take on the Jokers at 7:00 pm, while the Lads engage in an exhibition battle with the visiting Hack H.C. at 8:00 pm. The final game of the night will see the Porcupines face off against the Gas Station Islanders.
