TORONTO - The upstart Brockton Rockets registered their first-ever goal this past Saturday, following it up with two other tallies for a hard-won 3-3 tie with the league-leading Humiliation. The Humiliation (4-0-2) continue to enjoy one of the best starts in the team's 11-year history, remaining unbeaten after six games.
The historic first goal for the Rockets (0-2-1) came at the 8:23 mark of the 1st period and was potted by speedy Brockton forward Oliver Sutherns. Jason Pilling collected the lone assist on the play. Dan Kleiman put the team up by a pair a mere two minutes later, converting a pass from Ian Merringer to find the twine behind Humiliation spare goaltender Tony Lanz. The two-goal lead would stand up well into the 2nd period before being cut in half by Humiliation sniper Mike Thompson who one-timed a hard set-up pass from line-mate Stephen Cribbin.
Veteran Humiliation forward Luke Moretti would draw his side even late in the 3rd frame while Nicos Fassler followed suit a minute later, putting the Humiliation ahead for the first time in the game (and picking up his second point of the night in the process). But it was Dan Kleiman's second goal of the night, scored exactly one minute later, that would stand up as the real cause celebre, knotting the score and ultimately launching the Rockets out of the doldrums of the loss column for the first time in the young team's brief history.
Meanwhile, the Wheafield Souldiers (3-0-4) managed to remain unbeaten on the season as well, skating to a second-consecutive tie with the Gas Station Islanders (2-2-2). Souldiers defenceman Keven Magura opened the scoring at 8:35 of the 1st period, skating in from the point to handcuff GSI goalie Sean Markle with a hard, ice-level snapshot from the top of the left circle. Isles speedster Klint Davies tied things up early in the 2nd, intercepting an errant pass and taking it to Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland and beyond. Dylan Hudecki put the Gassers up by a goal a minute-and-a-half later, but was answered in short order by opponent Brad Sveistrup, whose third goal of the season tied things up at 2-2. The game's 3rd frame saw plenty of chances but no additional scoring.
In the night's other UUHA game, the Jokers (4-2-0) got the better of the Parkdale Lads (1-4-1) to the tune of 8-3. Jokers sniper Mike Takacs potted an astounding five goals while perennial leader-board denizen Steve Levine registered one goal and four assists in the contest. Tyler Stewart and Hunter Collins rounded out the Jokers scoring, while Fabian Ruzic and Mike Ryan (2) registered tallies for the losing side.
UUHA action continues this Saturday, Nov. 5 with the Lads taking on the Islanders at 7:00 pm. The following game sees the Humiliation welcome the Hack for their first of three UUHA exhibition games this season. The night's programme wraps up with the Parkdale Porcupines still hunting for their first win of the season, this time against the Jokers at 9:00 pm.
