Humiliation, Souldiers Draw, Remain Unbeaten

TORONTO - The first-place Humiliation and the Wheatfield Souldiers battled to a 3-3 draw this past Saturday, leaving both squads' unbeaten records intact. The two teams remain the only UUHA franchises yet to suffer a loss on the season.

The Souldiers (2-0-3) opened the scoring less than five minutes into the 1st period when team captain Chuck Molgat surprised pivoting Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan with a tight bank shot from just behind the goal line. The lead was extended two minutes later when Brad Sveistrup, left unmolested at the right side of the Humiliation net, converted a second rebound attempt, patiently lifting the puck up and over the goalie and into the twine.

Despite a relatively short bench, the Humiliation (3-0-1) got the better of the 2nd frame, cutting their opponent's lead in half at the 4:37 mark with a goal-mouth tally from Eric Partington. The Harkness brothers restored the Souldiers' two-goal lead early in the 3rd period with Steve jumping up into the slot to one-time Mike's hard feed from behind the Humiliation net. That buffer lasted for just a couple of minutes, though, as veteran Humiliation forward Luke Moretti won an offensive-zone battle along the boards to set up linemate Mark Simmons for a hard snipe from the top of the slot.

With just over three minutes remaining in the game, the trailing team's prospects dimmed as gentlemanly forward Paul Morris received a rare call for holding. A short time later the Humiliation called a timeout, then successfully argued with referee Doug Mundy to have a full 16 seconds added to the score clock in order to compensate for a perceived lapse between the calling of the timeout and the stoppage of the clock. The move would prove controversial - if only in the Souldiers dressing room following the game.

Back at full strength having killed off the penalty to Morris, and with mere seconds remaining in the game, the Humiliation pulled goaltender Sanagan for the extra attacker as a Souldiers giveaway saw the play move into the leading team's zone. Although that rush was successfully broken up by the Souldiers, an ensuing clearing attempt was picked off by marquee Humiliation centreman Mike Thompson, fed over to Joe Cook and ultimately put past Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland by Mark Sanagan. The goal (Sanagan's first of the season) drew the teams even with just 16 seconds remaining on the clock and no further goals were scored.

In other UUHA action, the Jokers (3-1-0) handed the exhibition Brockton Rockets (0-2-0) their second straight 6-0 defeat with Mike Takacs, Steve Chamberlain, Steve Levine (2),  Craig Hughson and Gary Rideout Jr. each picking up goals. Jokers netminder Burke Lawrence earned the shutout.

Meanwhile, the Gas Station Islander (2-2-1) dominated the struggling Parkdale Porcupines (0-5-0) to the tune of 8-1. Dominic Chartier collected his second hat-trick of the season (as well as a pair of assists), while Klint Davies and Nick Purdon both tallied twice for the winning side. GSI's Kevin Lacroix picked up his first goal of the season, as did the Porcupines' James Walker.

The UUHA is back at it next Saturday, Oct. 22 with the Parkdale Porcupines looking for their first win of the season as they go up against the Wheatfield Souldiers at 7:00 pm. The following game sees the Parkdale Hockey Lads return to the ice after a two-week break to take on the Flying Burritos in exhibition play. And the 9:00 pm contest will see the Humiliation attempt to remain unbeaten as they do battle with the Jokers.
