What The Funk?: Lads, Souldiers, GSI Struggle To Find Net

TORONTO - In golf, posting a single point after an hour's play means you're on fire. In hockey, it means a team's offensive fire has been extinguished. Either that, or you've come up against a particularly red-hot goaltender.

While goalies Sean Markle, Sheldon Shurland and Luis Freitas each made key saves and consistent stops in their respective contests this past Saturday night, their teams' offensive components rarely clicked combining for a collective total of just three goals over the course of three hours of play. The short list of goal scorers included Lads forward Kyle Welton, GSI's Rob Weir and erstwhile Souldiers sniper Eric Toth.

For the Souldiers and Lads, this was the second consecutive single-goal effort, the two teams having tied each other in last Saturday's season opener. GSI managed to get three past Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence last weekend - a hat trick by typically dominant centreman Dominic Chartier, no less.

So why the goalscoring funks? Solid goaltending (as mentioned above) is apparently part of the story, evidenced by Saturday's shot counts. GSI put the puck at their opponent's tender 20 times, while the Souldiers narrowly bettered that figure with 21 net tests of their own. Meanwhile, the Lads directed a respectable 19 shots at Humiliation goalie Chris Sanagan. But the quality of all those varied greatly with the mean being somewhere below the figurative hockey-pants hem line. For their part, the Souldiers were overheard bemoaning a consistent lack of cohesive breakouts. But the same is likely true of the other two underachieving squads. An abundance of unforced turnovers and chase-free dump-and-chase plays continue to dog some teams' efforts, as well.

The Lads and GSI (both winless in the early going with identical 0-1-1 records) will have an opportunity to work out their doldrums together next Saturday, as the two teams square off for the first of three meetings this season. Meanwhile, the winless-yet-undefeated Souldiers (0-0-2) will have their hands full up against the undefeated Jokers (2-0-0). The Funniest Team on Ice has had no problem whatsoever finding the back of the net this season, thus far potting a league-leading 12 tallies over the course of just six periods of play.

The Humilaition (2-0-0) takes the night off next Saturday while the win-less Parkdale Porcupines (0-2-0) will partake in the first exhibition game of the new UUHA season as they go up against the Flying Burritos.
